WELCOME TO THE LABYRINTH
You've just entered the extensive internet archive of the Rotterdam-based visual artist Arnold Schalks: a labyrinthic virtual library of over 4.300 files, taking up a disc space of more than 2 gigabytes. The archive is linked with another 2.200 files on external websites and databases, documenting four of my specific art projects: Bühne de BovenLucht, art space the Free Shed, OCW / stage for small scale events and newssheet de Surinoemer.
The Arnold Schalks Internet Archive consists of a bookshelf, on which all my independent publications and multiples as well as other profession-related publications are drawn up in battle array. Further down, you will find the even móre extensive curriculum-section with organizers, including all my activities in accordance with the indicated categories. All my independent publications can be downloaded for free from the respective pages as a .pdf- or .epub-file.
The original version of this archive was first uploaded to the internet on April 14, 1998. I used the 1996 Claris Home Page version 2.0 to build the site. Despite of the technical progress and expanding possibilities, I maintained the original design of a shelf with books and organizers. Until recently, Claris Home Page proved to be sufficiently flexible to keep up with all new plugins and applications. Finally, the introduction of Apple's MacOS 10.4 made further use of Claris Home impossible. I changed to Dreamweaver, but the tried and tested Claris Home Page layout kept serving as a template for future pages.
For proper navigation within the archive, I included 'back to...'-options on almost every page or in any window. Clicking the 'back to...'-option not always leads you back to a specific previous location within the archive, in other words: 'deeplinking' within the archive was not always possible. In case you get lost, you can always return to a desired previous location by repeatedly clicking the 'return/previous'-button of your browser.
I wish you all the best on your way through my archive.
